« Quotation of the week – Main – "That's what I've got" »
Being the title of an interesting article at First Drafts. Two big quotes:
To this day, the number of people bracketed as ‘working class’ by sociologists is falling, while the number identifying as such is rising.
And:
Moreover, once class becomes understood in cultural terms as opposed to economic ones, no class is ever doomed to the historical dustbin, but can wax and wane over the years.
Fair enough. I would describe myself as working class since that is my background: son of a fire extinguisher servicer and a lollipop lady, neither of whom earned more than £12,000 per year for their entire working lives. Economically, though, I am nowhere near working class; in fact, I'm probably in the top 15% of earners in the country, own a flat in London, drive an Audi and occasionally drink in East Dulwich (though more often than not can be found doing the self same thing in Peckham).
One thing I've always wondered, then, is where that leaves me: working or middle class?
