I gazed in interest at x and never thought of why

As a result of various conferences and visits, the old digital camera occasionally has the chance to come out of the dark and do its job. Below are records of visits to various campuses around the UK.

Perhaps the purest of the known sciences, mathematics underpins - for whatever reason you wish to believe - the world around us. For many, maths is the subject that attracted much loathing from them at school, which is understandable given the standard of and approach to teaching the subject that many seem to have. With an obvious leaning to mathematics on arbitrary constant, it seems a shame to ignore the rich possibilities - and enjoyment - that maths can bring with suitable enthusiasm and the right approach afforded by this website, thus the maths section will act as a departure point for maths references on the web.
Not wanting to be to narrow in it's treatment of maths, arbitrary constant seeks to make accessible - perhaps even interesting - the subject that attracted so much loathing from schoolchildren and beyond the world over. This is done in three ways:
   1. Areas of interest >> jumping on the bandwagon of science popularisation with a look at some areas of maths that are both fascinating and intriguing in a none-too-technical manner

   2. Research >> a detailed and relatively technical look at the area of symmetry analysis, motivated by the subject matter of the aforementioned PhD diary, included to give a taste of an area of mathematics at an abstract, technical and exciting level

   3. PhD diary >> a look at the people behind maths, either dispelling or (more likely) confirming what everyone thinks about mathematicians
The best approach is to just have a look around and see if anything catches your eye. Please feel free to contact arbitrary constant if you have any comments or suggestions.
